“The world’s favorite season is spring. All things seem possible in May,” as quoted by Edwin Way Teale. The month of May does seem to bring many possibilities. As retirees, we have more freedom and flexibility with our daily schedule. Freedom to travel, meet friends for a leisurely bite to eat, or even babysit the grandkids. Our freedom, of course, is dependent upon our health and finances. How fortunate we are to have superior health benefits and our hard-earned pensions!
Of course, if the governor had his way, we would lose these so called “entitlements” and need to rely on welfare and Medicaid. The best way we can maintain our promised pensions is to ensure mandatory quarterly payments are made by the state into our pension systems. By getting the legislator to place the constitutional amendment on November’s ballot and voting to have it made into law, we are securing and safeguarding our pensions now and for future public school employees. Stay tuned for how you can be involved in this necessary step over the next few months.
I hope you joined us at our May general membership luncheon. At that time, a new slate of officers had been elected for the 2016-2018 term. It will be my honor to continue to serve as your president for the next two years. Also returning to their respective offices are Pat Durastanti as 1st vice president, and Mary Jo Klockner as recording secretary. Newly elected officers are Bill Tucker as 2nd vice president, Gene Gray as treasurer, and Paul Everett as recording secretary. If you are interested in serving on one of our standing committees, please contact me. We would love to see more of our 1265 members engaged and involved in the workings of our association.
MCREA is extending our travel options. I’m pleased to announce we will be sponsoring a trip to Austria and Germany to tour the Christmas markets from Dec. 10-16. On Monday, June 6th at 2:00 PM at the Villa Manninos Restaurant, a speaker from Collette will do a one hour presentation. Please see the article inside this newsletter for more information.
I wish you all the best this spring and summer. I hope your possibilities come to fruition, bringing you happiness and a sense of contentment.
Yours in solidarity,
